Leaving Home and Finding Yourself

Leaving home is supposed to be exciting, so why does it feel like grief? Both can be true at once.

Leaving Home and Finding Yourself

Moving out is supposed to be a milestone — freedom, independence, the start of real life. What people don't talk about is the grief that often comes with it: missing the version of home you grew up in, even if you couldn't wait to leave.

You might feel lonely in ways you didn't expect, or realize you don't yet know who you are without your family's rhythms around you. That's not weakness — that's the real work of becoming an adult. You're building a self from scratch, and that's disorienting by design.

Be patient with the transition. Create small rituals that make a new place feel like yours. Call home when you need to. You're allowed to be proud and heartbroken in the same breath.
