Blending Families Without Losing Yourselves
Blended families aren't broken families — but they need a different map. Here's how to build one that holds.

Blending families is rarely the instant 'yours, mine, and ours' harmony people hope for. It's two histories, two sets of grief, and two parenting styles learning to live under one roof. The children didn't choose this, and they're allowed to have complicated feelings about it.
The most common mistake is rushing closeness. Stepparents try too hard; kids resist; resentment builds. Better to move slowly and let relationships form on their own timeline. You don't have to love each other immediately to respect each other.
Protect the original bonds too — a child still needs their parent. And protect your couple relationship, which is the foundation the whole new family rests on. Stability comes from patience, not pressure.
